Sex Reassignment Surgery
Procedures for the treatment of patients with gender dysphoria
The role of the surgeon in the treatment of gender dysphoria is not that of a simple technician performing the surgery. The really committed surgeons will have to know the history of each patient. For this reason, the surgeon must speak clearly and extensively with his patients and have a close relationship with the other health professionals (multidisciplinary team) who are actively involved in this treatment.
Sex reassignment surgery (transgender or transsexual surgery) is commonly the last and the most important step in the treatment of gender dysphoria. While some transsexuals, transgender or people with gender disagreement are satisfied with their gender identity and role without surgery, for many others surgery is essential and medically necessary to alleviate their gender dysphoria.
