Metoidoplasty

Metoidoplasty is the procedure of sex reassignment from woman to man, in which the vaginal canal is closed (vaginectomy) and the formation of a neophallus using the clitoris (previously hypertrophied by hormone therapy) and the remodeling of the labia majora and smaller to form a scrotal bag, during this procedure testicular prostheses are implanted.


It is a procedure that is performed in a single stage and where you can create the appearance of a penis which is functional to achieve urination while the patient is standing.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I AM A CANDIDATE?

The World Professional Association for Transgender Health is in charge of carrying out the guidelines that are followed internationally for patients with gender dysphoria. The following criteria for METOIDOPLASTY in Female to Male patients (FtM) are essential to complete prior to surgery:

  1. Persistent gender dysphoria, well documented (2 independent evaluations)
  2. Ability to make a fully informed decision and to authorize and give consent to be served
  3. Age of majority
  4. If there is a medical or mental health condition, it must be well controlled
  5. Receive for 12 months hormone therapy appropriate for the role that the patient wishes
  6. Live for 12 continuous months in the gender role that the patient wishes

HOW MANY DAYS SHOULD I STAY HOSPITALIZED?

The approximate hospitalization days are from 3 to 5 days and will depend on the response of each person to the surgery.
After discharge from the hospital it will be necessary to be in revisions on an outpatient basis for at least 1 more week.

WHAT KIND OF ANESTHESIA IS USED?

It can be performed with regional anesthesia (epidural) which confers good postoperative analgesia at the same time. In a case that is not possible due to some special circumstance of the patient, it could be performed under general anesthesia.
